Unplugging from the Stream

Question tonight is …
What exciting places have you visited or vacationed?

Previous question that I will still not answer – maybe tomorrow 😉
Have you ever been given a present that you hated/disliked? What was it?  Who gave it to you? What was the occasion? How did you react – could they tell that you didn’t like it?

I was going to answer, but I got a call from my daughter around 3:30am.  She was crying, and had been stranded by her ride downtown after a party while she was in the bathroom.  I was so angry that I was screaming at the girl the entire way to pick her up … not in person, just while I was driving, so that I could get it out of my system.  I was going to have to take my daughter back to this girl’s house, and I planned to wake up the mother and scream at her as well, so when i was about halfway there, I got a call from my daughter that another friend had shown up, and would take her home.  This was probably better for all involved – in particular me since I probably would have gotten myself arrested – I was that angry.

You just DON’T leave a 19 year-old girl stranded on the strip near campus … you just don’t!!!  UT campus is infamous for rapes, and the homeless sleep in the bushes all around there.  I’m sure most of the homeless guys are harmless, but it takes only one …

Anyway, I was livid, and I’ve lost the fun mood I was in when I started this post, so my answer will keep 😉

I took a nap today, of course, but it was a late one because I was busy getting my room organized, and that wore me out.  I still have a lot to do in here, but the main problem where I couldn’t easily sit to do my homework or photo editing has been remedied 🙂

… thinking about those eggs again … I’m running out of time  …

Today is now day 25 (YAY!!!) of my favorite month which culminates, as I’ve mentioned many, many times now, in my favorite holiday of Halloween, and my next Halloween themed image can be seen below …

Continuing on the vegan theme of the day, please enjoy the silly Halloween cartoon below.  I”ll see if I can’t get another photo ready for tomorrow.  I think that I’ll have better luck finding pumpkins and things sitting around now that we’re closer to the actual holiday.

Have a great night, fellow Pressers, and sweet dreams 🙂

Unplugging from the Stream

Well, the whole getting up at 4:00am to shoot the eclipse thing didn’t happen earlier.  The kids were excited about going, and actually got themselves up before me, and came to call me at 3:45am.  I asked them if they had checked outside … there was a short pause, and then I was informed in a dejected tone, that it was raining.  They went back to bed a little disappointed.  Me?  I  snuggled deeper under the covers, and happily went back to sleep.  I would have gone, if for no other reason than to not disappoint the kids,  but I was not the least bit upset that there was no eclipse to be seen for us 😉

Day 49 of my doctoral journey, and I am looking at two more hours or so to finish this week’s assignment tonight.  I worked on it a bit at lunch, but got pulled over to other things (squirrel!), and made little headway.  I was so exhausted when I got home from work that I took a nap, although that’s kind of my plan anyway, and now I am rested and ready to tackle the assignment.

If I were able to focus, and just work on the assignment, it would probably just take an hour, but my mind jumps all over the place, and I have to take feed some of these distractions or they truly interfere with my concentration. That’s how I work best, though, so I’m not complaining … I just know that I have to add in the extra time to break frequently and regain my focus.

I am a firm believer in the old Greek adage of, “Know thyself” and I work most effectively when I focus in short spurts when it’s a rote assignment like I have tonight.  I can become fully absorbed almost to the point of obsession, and to the exclusion of external distractions when I’m working on a research paper.  I let my kids know in advance when I am preparing to tackle a research topic, and they are usually good about not interrupting, or at least letting me complete my thought before I pull my attention away.  It can frequently take them several attempts to get my attention in this mode when I am “in the zone” and I thoroughly enjoy those times when I become that deeply immersed in research or an activity such as editing a photo or creating a digital paintograph 🙂

— Turned out to be 3 hours as my daughter thought called in a panic because she was stranded with a flat tire, so I went to pick her up.  I arrived, walked around the car, and the tires were fine, but the low pressure gauge had come on, and she was under the impression that the car was doing all manner of horrible bouncy, pulling, noisy, dangerous things.  I walked around the car, only to find that the tires all looked fine, and we switched vehicles so that I could assess the issue.  It was pulling a bit to the right, but not horribly so, and was a little wobbly, but she could have driven home just fine on it.

This, however, was not what made me angry – what made me angry is that I found out that she never even got out of the vehicle to inspect the tires!!!  My assignment was late because of this, and that angered me a bit more.  She is moving out of the house into an apartment with a friend in a couple of weeks, and this helpless stance that she has assumed will not serve her well in that situation … teenagers!!!

Nearing the end of day 8 of my favorite month which ends on my favorite holiday – Halloween, and my next Halloween themed photo can be seen above …

I call this one – what else?  Purple Haze 😉

Have a great night, fellow Pressers !!!

Day 43 – Unplugging from the Stream

Tonight was PMP class from 6:00 – 9:00pm after working all day. Kid drama today was finding out that my 15 year old skipped school today … grrrr

On the social media front, I have been elloing like a fool! You can find me there @eileenamcallister – … come join the fun!!!

So this is day 43 of my doctoral journey, and so far things are going well. I made a mistake on an assignment, but the teacher didn’t notice, so I’m certainly not going to point it out. I’ll just consider it a lesson learned, and not do it again.

Today is also day 2 of my favorite month which culminates in my favorite holiday which is the inspiration for the theme of which this post completes day 2 of 31 😀

So here is my second Halloween themed photo:

It’s not great, but it works 😉 I learned a valuable lesson recently, that everything doesn’t have to be perfect … it just has to be good enough, so that’s that.

Have a great night, fellow ‘Pressers, and Ride the Stream while I dream 🙂
